Users can now direct AI-generated audio overviews with Google’s NotebookLM’s “Customize” button.

On September 11, Google began testing the Audio Overview feature for NotebookLM, its AI note-taking application. The “Deep Dive” conversation, which involves two AI hosts driven by the Gemini 1.5 model, garnered notice in the IT industry. NotebookLM allows users to summarize uploaded content in a realistic 10-minute podcast-style conversation.

Google promptly released a new batch of NotebookLM updates shortly after launching the Audio Overview feature. By the end of September, NotebookLM started to support YouTube URLs and audio files, enabling users to create AI discussions and summarize films.

Prior to the most recent upgrade, the Gemini 1.5 tool lacked user-guided conversation choices but could transform text, audio, or video into realistic conversations between two hosts. According to Business Insider, customers wanted more control over the AI hosts’ attention to particular subjects from contributed content, according to Google NotebookLM product lead Raiza Martin.

NotebookLM now allows users to offer suggestions before generating the “Deep Dive” Audio Overview in response to this input.

What to Know and How to Use NotebookLM’s New “Customize” Feature

According to Google, the new “Customize” button allows users to guide the conversation by offering suggestions prior to producing a “Deep Dive” audio overview. For example, they can change the level of expertise to fit their audience or highlight specific topics. Users can also listen to the Audio Overview while using NotebookLM.

Create a new notebook, add at least one source, select “Notebook guide,” and then click “Customize” to alter the chat. NotebookLM will create dialogue based on your input once you enter your instructions for the AI hosts.

The company makes it apparent that audio summaries are not intended to be “comprehensive or objective,” but rather merely a “reflection of the sources you’ve uploaded and any instructions you provide.”

NotebookLM also asked users to apply for early access to a trial program and revealed a paid enterprise edition with enhanced functionality. Later this year, more details on cost and access will be released.

As the product approaches its one-year anniversary of full availability, NotebookLM has finally removed the designation of “Experimental,” with millions of people currently using the tool.
