Key Takeaways
- There are currently 275 million active users on Threads per month.
- Three months have passed since Threads reached 200 million.
- Although X is still far ahead, some people are thought to be alienated by its regulations.
With more than 275 million monthly active users, Threads is now well-known but still lags far behind Elon Musk’s X, according to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri.
The milestone was achieved three months after Threads hit 200 million users. That’s a lot of growth for a service that took almost a year to reach 175 million users after reaching 100 million in its first few days.
Mosseri did not cite a specific cause for the growth. However, the rise of Threads has often been ascribed to a mix of Meta’s active efforts to gain users through Facebook and Instagram, as well as discontent with X’s growing tolerance for hatred and false information.
The total doesn’t even approach X’s stated figures. Musk stated that as of April 2024, there were over 600 million active users on his site, a significant increase from the 368.4 million users at the pinnacle of the Twitter era in 2022.
It also implies that the distance is narrowing and that Threads’ momentum, which had previously paused, is now resuming.
Naturally, keeping people interested is the difficult part. Common grievances about Threads still include a perceived lack of participation and worries that it isn’t responding to threats with the authority it needs.
But despite fulfilling a pledge to allow barred users to access public posts, X has simply provoked criticism. Some users worry that it makes it easier for stalkers and other abusers to monitor their victims’ movements. This can cause some users to quit due to safety concerns or just because they don’t agree with a social media company that might implement such a rule.
