Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 Development Is Upended by a Change in Creative Director

Key Takeaways
  • The leadership of Marvel’s Wolverine project has changed as a result of Brian Horton leaving Insomniac Games to work on Xbox’s Perfect Dark revival.
  • The creative duties have been taken over by Marcus Smith and Mike Daly, which raises concerns about the game’s timing and direction.
  • Despite being announced in 2021, Wolverine’s release date is still unknown as fans wait for further information due to ongoing development issues.

With Brian Horton departing to work on Xbox’s planned exclusive Perfect Dark revival, Insomniac Games’ upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine project for PS5 has experienced a major leadership transition.

Representatives from Sony have confirmed the report, which reveals a team reorganization within Insomniac. According to reports, Horton left Wolverine during the summer. He was previously known for his work on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. He is now working with Xbox on Perfect Dark, which is a reimagining of the iconic spy-thriller series.

His new role demonstrates Xbox’s faith in Horton’s background as they work to bring the brand back to life.

Marcus Smith, best known for his work on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, was given creative duties by Insomniac after Horton left. Meanwhile, Cameron Christian, who is still employed by Insomniac in another capacity, has been replaced as game director by Mike Daly.

One of Insomniac’s most popular PS5 exclusives, Rift Apart, was previously developed by Smith and Daly, indicating Sony’s ongoing faith in their combined skills.

Though Wolverine has encountered some development challenges, such as the data leak that revealed plot points and early gameplay concepts last year, these creative alterations have raised questions about the film’s direction and production schedule.

Insomniac has mostly kept Wolverine a secret despite its 2021 announcement, which adds to the intrigue surrounding the project’s present status.

The studio, which is renowned for producing high-caliber games quickly, has encountered new production difficulties recently. Most notably, Insomniac had to reduce a number of aspects of Spider-Man 2 in order to fulfill timelines impacted by COVID-related delays.

The ambiguity around Wolverine’s release date is further increased by Sony’s recent move toward late-stage marketing reveals. Although there have been rumors of a potential teaser during the December Game Awards, Sony has not confirmed an official update.

In other developments, Sony recently declared that Concord and its developer Firewalk Studios would be shut down.
